Details

This is an extraordinary piece and one of the most interesting finds we have ever come across. An exceptionally rare and unique late-1960s blouse by the little-documented London counter-culture boutique brand, Mother Wouldn’t Like It, created by Bryan King. In March 1968, Honey magazine described King working from a Queensway attic, making beautiful shirts by hand and selling them from his stall in Kensington Market, and so this piece is rich with history.

Made from a sheer fabric and covered in a velvet leaf design, with rich jewel colours moving through varying shades, the gathered two-part bishop sleeves are finished with blue velvet cuffs, while a matching velvet collar frames the neck. It fastens at the back with a metal zip and hook, with buttons at the cuffs. A genuinely rare surviving piece of London’s late-1960s counterculture boutique movement, and a blouse that feels more like wearable art than a mere piece of clothing.

Made in England

Era: late 1960s

Materials: There is no composition label, so the exact materials cannot be guaranteed, but likely a sheer nylon/chiffon, flocked devoir

Measurements:

Shown on a size 6-8, 34C bust

Bust: up to 38”

Waist: 36”

Length: 23”

Labelled a vintage UK 14. The fabric has no stretch or give, so we recommend allowing some room beneath the maximum 38” bust measurement.

Condition:

Excellent overall vintage condition overall, The fabric is exceptionally fine and delicate, and there are a few places where it is pulling slightly. These areas have been photographed clearly for honesty. A beautiful and very wearable piece, although it should naturally be handled and stored with care.
