A beauty of a Victorian top hat in a great condition that likely dates to around 1840–1860. It is a very handsome piece of history from a period in which great pride was taken in the work Britain produced. It displays the Royal Coat of Arms, a mark of quality at that time, showing that it was a luxury item for a gentleman rather than an everyday hat, and above the coat of arms is the capitalised word 'SUPERFINE'. We agree, it is indeed super duper fine.

 

An even lovelier addition and sign of provenance is the faded handwritten name, most likely belonging to the former wearer. Whilst it makes a fantastic collector's piece, especially as these items are becoming rarer and rarer. It would also make a beautiful accessory piece for an eccentric vintage dresser, much in the Stevie Nicks mould, or the perfect addition to an outfit for a gothic Whitby weekend.

 

Era: c. 1840–1860

Materials: silk plush, grosgrain, silk lining (we believe)

Interior marking:  “SUPERFINE” with Royal Coat of Arms mark of quality

Measurements: Circumference: 21.5"; Height: 6.5"

Condition: In good antique condition for a hat of 200 years old. The quality is evident by how well it has stood the test of time. It does have some minor structural bending, though not very noticeable. Still wearable. The inside silk shows some areas of shattering and wear, though of course this is to be expected, and it is still intact. There are some general wear and marks of time. Please do study the photographs before buying.
